Topic: Quizzing the First Age: Now Begun!Quizzing the First Age
"At the first rising of the Sun above the earth the younger children of the world awoke in the land of Hildórien in the uttermost East of Middle-earth that lies beside the eastern sea; for measured time had come upon earth, and the first of days, and the long awaiting was at an end." (HoME5, Quenta Silmarillion §82) Greetings, and welcome to the long-awaited 'C of H Quiz'! Rather than being solely focused on Children of Húrin as both that informal name and its placement in the CoH Forum would suggest, this Quiz will be widened to focus on the entire First Age. Now, you may notice the quote above, which is here to illustrate a point — the term 'First Age' is not intended to represent the nigh-600 year portion during the Years of the Sun, but both that and the 450 Valian Years prior to that (starting at the awakening of the Elves at Cuiviénen in 4550 Years of the Trees).
As the First Age is longer than the following ones, you should find a wide variety of topics to quiz on, limited not by place but only time — both Aman and Middle-earth (naturally including Beleriand) are viable, whether you wish to ask about the music of Ulmo's horns or the craftmanship of the gates of Gondolin. The other constraint, of course, is what sources you are allowed to choose questions from — based on the choices of the capable Quiz Master and Quiz Mistress, Beren Camlost and Ethuil e-Daur., the resources selected have been Children of Húrin (of course), Unfinished Tales ( meaning the 'First Age' portion) HoME 1-4, and the portion Quenta Silmarillion of the published Silmarillion. The format of this Quiz will be that the person who guesses the previous question correctly can ask the next question; here are some rules: 1. Only one question at a time 2. The correct answer must be verified before posting the next question 3. All Plaza rules should be followed 4. If two days have gone by and no one has guessed the question correctly, the asker needs to provide a hint 5.Citations / quotations must be used to confirm the answer 6. Participation / correct answers are tributed It will be up to the two QM's to enforce the rules and contact participants if need be (e.g. if a hint isn't provided after the two days, &c.), but we wish you luck and hope you enjoy! halfir and Tyr Co- Admins - Lore Having the honor of the first question just to get this rolling, How did Tuor find the Gate of the Noldor (Annon-in-Gelydh)? |

Tuor found that Gate by mistake. He met noldor on his way and asked do they know where that Gate locates and they answered that they had just walked through it and then they showed it to Tuor.

To verify the answer, here is the quote:
'But when Tuor had lived thus in solitude as an outlaw for four years, Ulmo set it in his heart to depart from the land of his fathers, for he had chosen Tuor as the instrument of his designs; and leaving once more the caves of Androth he went westwards across Dor-Lomin, and found Annon-En-Gelydh, the Gate of the Noldor which the people of Turgon built when they dwelt in Nevrast long years before.' Yes, Lycan is correct - and Mithrandir. Tuor did find the gate on his own and the elves verified it ( Unfinished Tales, Of Tuor and His Coming to Gondolin ). Lycan, please ask the next question. |

Because if he were alive he nothing would stop him coming back to help them and cast out the Easterlings over running Dor-lomin.
'Then i think he is dead,' said Turin, and before his mother he restrained his tears; 'for no one could keep him from coming back to help us, if he were alive.' The Departure of Turin, CoH. |
