Tolkien scholars, artists, and experts give the Plaza their views

Scholars Forum 2011

The Scholars Forum invites well-known or lesser-known but interesting individuals and groups who are involved in the world of Tolkien, either as scholars, artists, or experts, to give the Plaza their views on different aspects of Tolkien’s world.

Our second year -2010 – has been as spectacular as our first -2009 - and the willingness of scholars and experts to share their thoughts and ideas with us nothing short of overwhelming. We owe them all a great debt of gratitude.

Discussion groups on the topics that they have presented have already been started and will continue now and throughout 2011.

Most rewardingly, 2011 is also a year in which some of those scholars who could not find their way clear to present in 2010 give us some exciting papers and a whole host of new scholars, artists, and experts come on board to share their views with us.

As in previous years, contributions will generally be on the basis of one a month, although it could well be that at times this will not be the case, as the commitments of some of those posting might well mean some rescheduling. That is why while we are announcing a list of those who have currently agreed to share their thoughts with us, we are not announcing a detailed diary of events.

For 2011, therefore, we currently have the following luminaries of the world of ME –in its widest sense- who have accepted out invitation.

Anne Petty -Tolkien scholar and specialist in Mythology and Finnish Folklore, author of Dragons of Fantasy, Tolkien in the Land of Heroes
Anke Eismann – leading illustrator and graphic designer, illustrator of Tolkien’s works and books related thereto including Tolkien’s View: Windows into his World
Professor Thomas Honneger - Professor for English Philology with special consideration of Medieval Studies at the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena – editor (together with Eduardo Segura). Myth and Magic: Art according to the Inklings, editor (together with Stratford Caldecott). Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Sources of Inspiration
Professor Jane Chance- Professor of English Rice University, author- Lord of the Rings-The Mythology of Power, Tolkien’s Art-A Mythology for England, edt. Tolkien the Medievalist
Peter Gilliver, Jeremy Marshall, Edmund Weiner –Oxford University Press –authors The Ring of Words –Tolkien and the Oxford English Dictionary
And of course we’ll keep you updated as further contributors come on board.

N.B. Should you wish to comment on any/all the pieces posted by our contributors please do so in the thread marked: Response to Contributions - please DO NOT post in the thread containing the contribution itself.
