Nimrodel
by Songbreeze

In Lorien, there was of old,
a maiden who dwelt there,
her mantle white, hemmed with gold,
with a star bound in her hair,
danced she did, day and night,
her step both light and true,
and she sang, in the moon’s pale light,
her hair of golden hue,
Nimrodel she was named,
”Lady of the White cave”.
Of her beauty, tales proclaimed,
this maiden fair and grave,
Danced she did by the stream,
In the sun’s fair light,
and her song as if in dream,
her hair a gleaming bright.
but of her now, none can tell,
for lost was she or yore,
from fairest glade or peaceful dell,
her steps are there no more

An elven ship at golden bay,
by the flowing sea,
awaited her, day by day,
to take her beyond the sea.
But whipping wind blew the craft
towards the heaving swell
and Amroth cursed the faithless raft,
that took him far from whom he loved well.
So with a last despairing cry,
he gave himself to the sea
and thus the elven prince did die
and lost now they both be
An elven prince of old was he,
who dwelt in Lorien fair,
and there Amroth meet she,
Nimrodel with golden hair,
But Alas now they both are lost,
to the firstborn race,
for to the West, they both have crossed,
and Lorien no longer their steps grace.

Lothlórien and Its Royal Family
by Mireya Bainon

Lothlórien was the most beautiful of the remaining elf-refuges during the Third Age, home to many elves that lived and slept in the trees. It was kept from capture for the most part by the power of Galadriel’s ring Nenya and squads of elven warriors around the boundaries of the wood called Rangers.

Not many people knew Lothlórien well - indeed, few mortals ever entered it. Many people believed that the Golden Woods were mysterious and evil and that Galadriel was a sorceress.

In Lothlórien many elvish arts were preserved, such as the making of lembas and weaving such as the cloaks the Fellowship received. It was the only place in Middle-earth where mellyrn (plural of mallorn) grew. Other plants of Lothlórien were elanor and niphredil.

Another difference that made Lothlórien unique was the effects of time. The time flows differently there. It makes one feel to have been there for only a short time, but a month may have gone by outside its boundaries.

Let us start with the most visible persons of the Kingdom and take a look at the Lady Galadriel who was the only daughter of Finarfin and Eärwen, and she had four brothers, including Finrod Felagund. She was married to Celeborn, an elf formerly of Doriath, who gave her the name Galadriel. Galadriel was the only woman to play a prominent role in the debate of the Noldor following the theft of the Silmarils.

She was an elven princess and a Noldorin elf, and she joined the Exile of the Noldor, returning to Middle-earth from Valinor with them. There, she lived with Finrod in Nargothrond, before entering Doriath, where she met and married Celeborn in the process. From the start of the Second Age, she lived in Lindon, but during the 700s she and Celeborn moved to Eregion. They then crossed the Misty Mountains, coming to Lothlórien, and Galadriel’s home for the rest of her life in Middle-earth.

Galadriel was one of the strongest of the Eldar in both mind and body. She was also a Ringbearer. She wielded the ring of water, called Nenya, which she used to protect Lothlórien. In the months leading up to the War of the Ring, she gave shelter to the Fellowship after their escape from Moria. During the War of the Ring, she helped repel three assaults on Lórien and also threw down the walls of Dol Guldur. Galadriel later passed over sea as one of the ringbearers, leaving her husband Celeborn behind.

Galadriel had other names as well, one of them was Nerwen which meant man-maiden, and was her mother-name; Artanis which means Noble-woman, of which Arwen is a cast-off name, this is her father-name; Alatáriel was her name in Quenya; and Altáriel was what she was called among the Telerin Elves. Galadriel was a Noldorin Elf. We don’t know the date of her birth but it is said to have been sometime during the years of the Two Trees of Valinor. She was a tall Lady, with long golden hair which was braided in many small braids.

Celeborn was Galadriel’s husband. In origin he was a Telerin elf, related to Nimloth, who was the mother of Elwing and wife of Dior Eluchil, who was the son of Beren and Lúthien. He was born and lived in Doriath during the First Age, where he met and married Galadriel; it was he who gave Galadriel her new name. When he came to Lothlórien, he was the Lord of the Galadhrim. There he and Galadriel dwelt for many years. After Galadriel departed over the sea, he meets with Thranduil, king of the wood-elves in Las Galen and Legolas’ father, and they form a land together. He also visits and eventually lives in Rivendell, now ruled by Elrohir and Elladan, Elrond’s sons that chose not to leave with their father. He eventually departs over the sea himself.

Not a lot is actually said about Celeborn, but we know he and Galadriel had a daughter called Celebrían, who married the Lord Elrond of Imladris. Celebrían was captured by Orcs, rescued and healed, then said she was weary of the world and went over the seas to Valinor. Celeborn was also called Teleporno, which is Noldorin. His birth date is unknown, but it predates the First Age. He also is tall, like Galadriel and has silver hair. He is not to be confused with Celeborn, the tree descended from Nimloth. The names do mean the same (silver tree), but the elf is named after the tree.

Celebrían was the daughter of Galadriel and Celeborn, and was part-Sindarin (from her father) and part-Noldorin (from her mother). Her name meant "silver-crowned lady" or "silver-crowned queen." She wedded Elrond in 109 T.A., giving him two twin sons in 130. She bore him Arwen in 241. When she set out from Rivendell in 2509, to visit her parents, she was captured by Orcs on the Redhorn Pass. The Orcs tortured her. She was rescued by her sons, who discovered she had a poisoned wound. Elrond was able to partly heal this wound, but she had bad memories of the incident. She departed over the sea in 2510, and perhaps was reunited with Elrond when he also passed over the sea over 500 years later.
