Riddles in the Dark IV | Get Riddlin'

    (
    source)

"Riddles were all he could think of. Asking them, and sometimes guessing them, had been the only game he had ever played with other funny creatures sitting in their holes in that long, long ago, before he lost all his friends and was driven away..."
~ Tolkien, The Hobbit: Riddles in the Dark

Greetings hobbits and visitors from foreign lands, and welcome to Riddles in the Dark!

If you are reading this right now, you are showing a particular interest in challenge. Well my friend, be prepared for just that and more in this game. Just be sure to read and abide by the rules below as you test your knowledge and wisdom at riddles!

    Rules for this Game
    1. The first person to reply with the correct answer gets to ask the next riddle.
    2. The riddle DOES have to be Tolkien or Middle-earth oriented.
    3. If the riddle is not answered correctly within 72 hours, the "riddler" should post the answer and ask a new riddle.
    4. If the last riddle has been solved and no new riddle has been posted within 72 hours, then a new riddle may be asked by anyone.

And our first riddle is a favorite from a childhood book of mine:

Old Mother Twitchett has but one eye
And a long tail which she lets fly,
And every time she goes over a gap
She leaves a bit of her tail in a trap

Hint: this one is easier to get if you know some Middle Earth history:

    What lives today,
    And dies tomorrow.
    Blade of kings,
    And Summer's sorrow.
"All you have to decide, is what to do with the time that is given to you."

By all means. I admit to being completely stumped. And feel free to ask a new one, if you've got one.

The answer is Icicle, the Blade of Kings reference is refering to Aiglos, Gil-Galad's spear.
I'll throw in a new riddle in half an hour or so, I have an errand to run.

It's a riddle and a pun! You are my new favorite person.

Well, we might be the only people right now, but I re-made this thread because apparently there were tons of requests for it to come back. If you make it, they... might.... come?

Who makes it, has no need for it.
Who buys it, has no use for it.
Who uses it can neither feel nor see it.
    What is it?

As the proprietor of the previous thread, I highly approve of its return! And to answer the riddle:

    A coffin

I actually know this one: candle!

Gandalf: These are Gundabad wargs. They will outrun you!
Radagast: These are Rhosgobel rabbits. I'd like to see them try.

What does man love more than life
Fear more than death or mortal strife
What the poor have, the rich require,
    and what contented men desire,
What the miser spends and the spendthrift saves
And all men carry to their graves?

Okay, thanks! This is a borrowed one.

    The end of the rainbow
    A man’s bad tooth

    but none in bone

    then petered out
    Powerful and corrupting

    What am I?

When my first is a task to a young girl of spirit,
And my second confines her to finish the piece,
How hard is her fate! But how great is her merit
If by taking my whole she effects her release?

    Upon one leg I stand
    Upon many, many feet.
Alone in my field I stand,
Through rain and snow and sleet.

    And here I have stood,
For year upon year upon year.
And hear I the peckers call,
As he pecks into my ear.

    My back is straight,
My skin is dark and tough.
Just reach out a finger small,
To gwntle hands, it feels rough

It is a dangerous business going out your front door. Especially if your house is in Wilderland. In that case, bar the door and board up the windows. It's going to be a long night.

Three days have passed. The answer is ... a HOLE!
    I know, it's bad isn't it.

But now for the new riddle -

A poor man sits in a tavern. He sees a man next to him withdraw from his pocket fifty gold coins, hearing a huge clink of gold in the process.
He turned to the rich man and stated, "I have an amazing talent. I know almost every song ever invented."
    The rich man laughed.
The poor man said, "I am willing to wager all the coins on your person, here tonight, that I can sing a genuine song with a lady's name of your choice in it."
The rich man laughed once again, and replied, "Joanna Stonearm-Millerton. That's my daughter. Try that."
The rich man went home penniless that evening, and the poor man was a rich man.
What song did the poor man sing?

Thankyou so much Here is a relatively swift and simple one. Because I am supposed to be finishing a cajoodle of RP posts.

I appear once in a minute
    And twice in a moment
But never in a thousand years.

    What am I ?

Thanks, but I won't be able to post a new riddle today, and tomorrow I'm going on holiday for a week, so it's open for anyone.

To unravel me, you need but a simple key.
No key that was made by locksmiths hand,
But a key the only I would understand.
    Radagast: I'll draw them off.
Gandalf: These are Gundabad wargs. They will outrun you!
Radagast: These are Rhosgobel rabbits. I'd like to see them try.

Woodland Elf hasn't been around lately so with permission from our most beloved Ulmo next riddle: I am weightless, but you can see me. Put me in a bucket, and I'll make it lighter. What am I? (credit goes to: Brain Food: Riddles- don't peek) good luck!

Since Moriel did not ask a new riddle in over seventy two hours, as the rules state, I will post a new one. This is a relatively easy one, just to get the game going. What crawls like a spider, walks like a dog, and speaks like a snake?

New riddle, hopefully not too easy

I am a word with two meanings. With one I can be broken, with the second I hold on. What am I?

    (source link -please don't peek)

    Good luck!

  85. I have spent the last two days thinking this over. I cannot believe I didn't get it until just earlier today as I was suiting up to go out to lunch. It's a tie, isn't it? Because you can break a tie but you can also tie a knot. (Thank goodness my father taught me how to tie a tie, I always hated people who wore the zip up and clip on ones)

72 hours have passed, so I guess that means I can post a new riddle (sorry I if I can't, I'm new):

    I am oft-times strong and oft-times weak,
    But no person's fool
There is no language I cannot speak,
Yet I have never been to school

I am not, but that was a pretty good attempt. Try concentrating more on the words: 'strong', 'weak', and 'speak'. (just a little clue there!)

Well, if I'm not mistaken that is the 72 hours up. The answer was: 'an echo'.

    My next riddle is:
I know a thousand faces, and count the tailed heads, feasting bright upon the eyes, of many who have died.
Wielding well a mighty power, who hath but humble stature. Masses fall upon their knees, to scarce behold my only side.
    What am I?

    Thanks Queen Nerwen!
In a one-story pink house, there was a pink person, a pink cat, a pink fish,
a pink computer, a pink chair, a pink table, a pink telephone, a pink shower– everything was pink!

    What color were the stairs?

There aren't any stairs, because it's a one story house.
